Frequently asked questions.
Everything you need to know about buying or selling a Thousand Trails membership through hitch.exchange.
Selling your membership
Can you actually sell a Thousand Trails membership?
Yes — Thousand Trails memberships are transferable, and a legitimate resale market exists for most contract tiers. The transfer must go through Thousand Trails' corporate office, and certain conditions apply (annual dues must be current, the contract must be in good standing). We handle the paperwork and coordinate directly with Thousand Trails on your behalf.
How do I sell my Thousand Trails membership?
The process is straightforward with hitch.exchange: submit your listing for free, we review it and publish it to our marketplace, qualified buyers enquire, we negotiate terms and handle all communication, and once a deal is agreed we coordinate the transfer through Thousand Trails. You pay nothing until your membership sells.
How long does it take to sell a Thousand Trails membership?
Time on market varies by contract tier and price. Elite Connections and Platinum Plus memberships in popular regions typically receive enquiries within days of going live. Lower-tier or heavily restricted contracts take longer. We publish a price guide with real sold data to help you price competitively from the start.
What is my Thousand Trails membership worth?
Resale value depends primarily on your contract tier, the regions your membership covers, annual dues, and current market demand. Elite Connections and VIP memberships in national or western regions command the highest prices. Our price guide shows recent sold prices by tier so you can set realistic expectations. Most memberships sell for between $500 and $4,000.
My annual dues are too high — can I get out of my Thousand Trails membership?
Selling through hitch.exchange is one of the cleanest exits available. Once the transfer to a new owner is processed by Thousand Trails, your dues obligation ends. We strongly advise against simply stopping payments — Thousand Trails can pursue collections and it damages your credit. A legitimate resale, even at a low price, is the better option. Some sellers price their membership at $1 just to exit cleanly.
How much does it cost to list my membership?
Listing is completely free. We charge an 8.5% service fee (minimum $149, maximum $499) only when your membership sells. If it doesn't sell, you owe nothing. You can calculate your net proceeds on our price guide page.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for the transfer?
Mainly, ensure your annual dues are current — Thousand Trails will not approve a transfer on an account in arrears. You'll also need your membership number and basic contract details, which you can find on your Thousand Trails member portal or your original contract documents. We guide you through everything once a buyer is agreed.
What happens to my Alliance membership?
Alliance memberships transfer with the remaining contract obligation — buyers inherit the full annual dues commitment, which is typically 10 years. Because of this, Alliance contracts are the hardest to sell and often price at or near zero. We list them, but we make sure both parties understand what's being transferred before any deal proceeds.
Buying a membership
Is buying a Thousand Trails resale membership safe?
Through hitch.exchange, yes. We verify every listing before it goes live, use Escrow.com to hold funds during the transfer, and coordinate directly with Thousand Trails to confirm the contract is clean and transferable. You only pay once the transfer is confirmed. hitch.exchange is operated by a licensed Indiana real estate broker (Lic #156112346) — the sale is a formal facilitated transaction, not a private Craigslist deal.
What contract tiers are available, and what do they mean?
Thousand Trails sells several tiers, ordered roughly by value: Elite Connections, Elite Basic, VIP, Platinum Plus, Platinum, Ultimate Odyssey, Gold, Escape, and Alliance. Higher tiers allow more nights, more parks, and better nightly rates. Our listings show exactly what each membership covers so you know what you're buying.
How do I buy a Thousand Trails membership through hitch.exchange?
Browse the listings on our marketplace, click through to any listing that interests you, and submit an enquiry. We handle all communication with the seller, negotiate terms, and guide you through the Escrow.com payment process. The whole thing typically takes 2–4 weeks once a price is agreed.
What is the Buyer Protection option?
Buyer Protection means your payment is held in Escrow.com — a regulated escrow service licensed by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation. Your funds are only released to the seller once Thousand Trails confirms the transfer is complete. This eliminates the risk of paying and not receiving the membership. We strongly recommend it for any purchase above $500.
Are there ongoing costs after buying?
Yes — Thousand Trails memberships come with annual dues that transfer to the new owner. The amount varies by contract type and region. Every listing on hitch.exchange shows the current annual dues so there are no surprises.
The process and timeline
How long does the Thousand Trails transfer take?
Once a deal is agreed and escrow opens, the transfer paperwork typically takes 2–4 weeks through Thousand Trails. We track the process directly with TT's corporate office and keep both parties updated throughout.
Who do I talk to — you or Thousand Trails directly?
Us, always. That's the point of using a broker. Sellers and buyers deal with hitch.exchange throughout — we handle every communication with Thousand Trails on your behalf. You won't be chasing Thousand Trails corporate or navigating their internal transfer department yourself.
Is hitch.exchange affiliated with Thousand Trails?
No. hitch.exchange is an independent marketplace operated by a licensed real estate broker. We are not affiliated with Thousand Trails or its parent company, Equity LifeStyle Properties, Inc. We operate a third-party marketplace for membership resales.
Fees and payment
What is the service fee?
8.5% of the agreed sale price, with a minimum of $149 and a maximum of $499. It is paid by the seller out of proceeds at closing — buyers pay no platform fee. You can use the fee calculator on our price guide to see your exact net.
When is the fee charged?
Only when your membership sells. We send a Stripe payment link to the seller once the transfer is confirmed. If the deal falls through at any point before closing, no fee is owed.
How does payment work through Escrow.com?
The buyer deposits funds into Escrow.com at the start of the transaction. Escrow.com holds the payment until Thousand Trails confirms the transfer is complete, then releases it to the seller minus our service fee. The process is FDIC-insured and regulated by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation.
